It’s in the Blog Introduction that I am an enthusiastic “little d” democrat and a less enthused “big D” Democratic Party member. The practice of “splitting” my ticket in the general election voting booth is not the problem so much as the absence of any worthy candidate from either of the two major political parties. So I keep my eyes and ears open for that third party slate than can earn my support and my vote.
Recent consternation about the “debt ceiling” and the prospect of default on national debt gives me even more interest in that hypothetical third party dedicated to fiscal responsibility above all else. Every member of Congress who ever voted for an unbalanced budget should be roundly condemned and thrown out of office (if still serving). As I near retirement I turn my attention to the Social Security Trust Fund. Guess what? There is no Social Security Trust Fund! The feckless bastards stole it and spent it all. Stealing from me is not the key to my heart.
Which of the two major parties is fiscally responsible? . . . Neither is the answer, although Republicans will pretend to be when a Democrat occupies the White House. During the Trump administration there were no Republican scruples about increasing the national debt.
Where are the “Fiscals,” my imaginary third party? . . . They don’t exist and probably never will. What about the existing third parties of the Libertarians and the Greens? The last time I paid attention to them, both the Libertarians and Greens had nominated morons to run for president. The Libertarian candidate knew nothing about the Syrian city of Aleppo at a time when any literate person knew of the carnage there. Meanwhile, the Green candidate vandalized heavy equipment at an oil pipeline site while being photographed and filmed.
It is not at all probable that I will fully support any presidential candidate in 2024. Biden is too old, though Reagan’s senility was tolerated by Republicans. Trump should be in prison for sedition. If you took from Trump whatever is left of his charisma, the remainder would be DeSantis. An age-related issue with Biden is his (probable) running mate, Kamala Harris. A 2024 vote for Biden may well be a vote for Harris whom I do not support after giving consideration to her political upbringing in California under the “tutelage” of then-married political boss Willie Brown. A solution to the problem would be Sen. Feinstein’s retirement followed by Gov. Newsom’s appointment of Harris to the empty Senate seat. For Newsom, that would fulfill his promise to appoint a Black woman to the seat. For Biden, he could select a more worthy running mate. And for Harris there would be a seemingly noble return to the Senate where she served prior to becoming VEEP.
If there is a “Fiscal Party” candidate out there, won’t you please come forward?
